GCLL Announces New Officers for 2003
The Gastineau Channel Little League board
of directors met this week to organize for the coming 2003 season.
J. Allan MacKinnon was reelected president of the league. He has been on
the Board for nine of the past ten years, serving as President for six
of those years. He is a long time volunteer and held various positions
in the organization while his boys played baseball.
The board presented a variety of topics
that will be addressed at their planning session scheduled for early November.
They discussed intentions to embrace the new technology and establish GCLL
on the Eteamz website as a result of the recent presentations at the Division
Conference held here in September. This would include website and On Line
Registration features. GCLL was the first Little Leagueâ organization
in the world to utilize the On Line Registration features of the Eteamz
Network for the Conference. According to MacKinnon, “now we can use this
convenient connection for our local folks who make use of the Internet
and technology.”
The board also reaffirmed the local participation
in the recently announced Child Protection Program of Little League Baseball.
The program, at one time voluntary, is now a requirement: “All local
Little Leagues are now required to conduct background checks on Managers,
Coaches, Board of Directors members and any other persons, volunteers or
hired workers, who provide regular service to the league and/or have repetitive
access to, or contact with, players or teams. Individuals are also required
to complete and submit a Little League Volunteer Application to their local
league.”
GCLL has been requiring written applications
and doing background checks since 1997 when the voluntary program first
began, according to MacKinnon. GCLL will be refining the details of complying
with the LLB requirements in the next few weeks.
Joyce Vick was elected by the group for
the position of League Information Officer to oversee the league’s web
site. She will oversee the new initiative to use the web for On Line Registration.
Personnel information on players and volunteers would not be online,
but would continue to be maintained on the league’s computer as we have
in the past, according to Vick. She has managed and coached youth sports,
served as secretary and treasurer for the league and is a member of the
Youth Activities Board of the CBJ.
Mary Lou Bavard was reelected as Vice
President for Softball. Mary Lou has been in the leadership for many years
and an advocate for kids and players in the fast pitch softball community.
Her two daughters are active in softball and son in baseball. Lisa
Baker is Vice President for Baseball. Baker, who has three boys playing
in the league, has been a volunteer, player agent, secretary and treasurer
for the league.
Mike Lindsey was reelected Safety Officer
and equipment manager. He led many successful teams as manager and coach
and is a former vice president for baseball. He is a long time volunteer
in youth sports. Keitha Kolvig was elected as Chief Player Agent.
In this role she is the “chief advocate for kids” as they are registered,
attend tryouts, are selected for teams. She works with the many player
agents for the various divisions of tee ball, softball and baseball to
“make the program work and be successful.”
Gail Fenumiai was elected secretary and
Susan Listberger treasurer. Darlene Jacobsen was elected Training Officer.
She will work with board members to create training opportunities for players,
coaches and officials. All three have coached or volunteered with
the league in past seasons.
Jim Douglas was reappointed Chief Umpire
for Baseball and Everett Boster was reappointed Chief Umpire for Softball.
Both officials hold voting positions on the volunteer board.
The group tentatively set the following
dates: Spaghetti Feed and Auction, January 12, 2003; Tryouts March 7 to
10, 2003; and opening day Saturday, April 26, 2003 at Adair Kennedy Baseball
Field.
Laurie A. Logsdon is the league administrator.
In this role she maintains records for the organization and performs a
myriad of tasks to keep the volunteers supported. |
