Christopher Orman joins CBJ's law department

A pair of old headphones sat atop a legal pad on Christopher Orman’s desk. He wasn’t listening to music.

As the incoming assistant city attorney and prosecutor to take over when August Petropulos steps down, Orman, 36, is listening to court transcripts.

But there was a time when he would have had music playing.

“When I was in law school, I went through a phase where I needed to get things done fast and keep myself going especially when I got tired,” he said. “I’d listen to, just, annoying music, like Aphex Twin and all that – which was not my personality at all.”

• At 11:25 p.m. Thursday, the Juneau Police Department responded to an assault in the 200 block of Front Street and assisted Probations with a remand. Alcohol was involved.

614 appeals made over property assessments

The city received more appeals to the Assessor’s office than any year prior following a recent change in the process for assessing properties that raised concerns among the public late last month.

In total, the assessor received 614 appeals. In past years the number has hovered between 350 and 400, according to the city’s Director of Finance Bob Bartholomew.

As mining booms in Southeast, so does mine training program

The mining industry in Southeast Alaska has taken off in recent years. And as mining has grown as a sector of the local, regional and state economy, the University of Alaska Southeast has embarked on a mission to meet the demand for new mine workers.

That’s where the Center for Mine Training comes in.

The UAS Center for Mine Training is a vocational education program created to teach students what they need to know in order to work in a mine, provide safety training and ultimately place young adults in the field.

Rustan Burton named publisher of the Empire

AUGUSTA, GA — Morris Publishing Group, LLC announced Friday the appointment of Rustan Burton to publisher of the Juneau Empire.

Burton’s media career began at The Anchorage Daily News in 2008 where he had various positions including retail sales manager. He is the current advertising director at The Daily Republic in Mitchell, SD, part of Forum Communications. Throughout his career at Forum, he has also held various corporate leadership and mentorship roles.

Raise awareness during 'Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day'

In honor of National Safe Boating Week, businessmen and boaters today will have something in common: all will be sporting life vests.

“I’ll be wearing my life jacket to work tomorrow,” said Docks and Harbors Port Director Carl Ucytil in celebration of “National Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day,” a joint initiative between the National Safe Boating Council and the U.S. Coast Guard that lasts all day today.

Sealaska Lands bills head to full House committee

The Sealaska Lands bill and a partial settlement went before a subcommittee on Thursday and now head to the full House Resources Committee for review.

Several Sealaska and federal representatives spoke before the House Committee on Indian and Alaska Native affairs regarding both bills.

The partial settlement, meant as a stopgap measure in the event the lands bill isn’t enacted, would transfer approximately 3,380 acres of the Tongass National Forest to partially fulfill the remaining land entitlement of Sealaska.

Cases challenge legality of anti-"smurfing" statute

Law enforcement officers did not have a warrant when they seized hundreds of records from local pharmacies that revealed the identity of every person in Juneau who purchased cold medication over the counter in past months, stretching back a “substantial” period of time, according to a criminal defense attorney who argued the search and the statute that allowed it was illegal.

Prosecutors are pushing back, saying no warrant was needed.

Auke Lake Boat Launch Opens

The Boat Launch at Auke Lake is now open to the public after the installation of regulatory buoys. Parks and Recreation reminded boaters in a statement released late Wednesday that they are subject to the following restrictions.

• Motorized vessels are allowed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. until May 31. Between June 1 and August 31, the hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

• Motorized use is prohibited between the lake shore and the buoy line.

• No wake is allowed near the Boat Launch, or between the buoy line and residential areas.

Ceremony celebrates Statter Harbor's revival

Armed with golden shears, state and local representatives celebrated the completion of phase one of the master plan at Statter Harbor with a ceremonial ribbon cutting there on Wednesday.

“Without the stalwart support of our elected officials, board members and civic leaders, this and other waterfront projects would remain locked as only good ideas and never come to fruition,” said Docks and Harbors Port Director Carl Uchytil. “I’m pleased to see the support and turnout of local officials today.”

Juneau honors fallen on Peace Officers Memorial Day

Members of the law enforcement community in Juneau turned out Wednesday to honor the memory of fallen officers during Peace Officer Memorial Day.

Officers saluted a wreath that was laid at the gravesite of Richard J. Adair, the 51-year-old Juneau police officer who was shot and killed along with Officer Jimmy E. Kennedy, 32, by a mentally ill man in April 1979.
